In what marks the first time a cable-operator has offered mobile-phone service, Cox Communications is rolling out a service that bundles wireless handsets with Web and TV subscriptions, reports Bloomberg News

Cox is offering the service in three markets starting today: Orange County, Calif.; Omaha, Neb.; and Hampton Roads, Va., the story says. The third-biggest U.S. cable operator will be in direct competition with wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, which for their part have been encroaching on cable companies’ domain with TV services, the article points out.

Cox will market its mobile service as "Unbelievably Fair," giving money back for unused minutes and tying in free TV, Internet or landline upgrades, the story says. "Customers will be attracted to our service because they’ll get more value out of our bundled offering than they will with alternatives providers," said Stephen Bye, Cox’s vice president of wireless.
