HBO Has Something New in Mind for Cinemax (Hint: It Wants to Shed Its ‘Skinemax’ Nickname)

HBO is quietly revamping its Cinemax sister channel, a process that is moving it away from the late-night, soft-core focus that earned it the nickname "Skinemax," the New York Post reports.

After a transition that has been taking place since last fall, the network will be focused on shoot-em-up TV series. One signal of the shift came in the recent announcement that it’s creating its first-ever primetime series, "Strike Back," an action series about U.S. secret agents and a British military unit fighting terrorists, the story notes.

Cinemax also has a deal to make a TV series based on the "Transporter" movies with the film’s original star, Jason Statham, the story notes. And it’s in talks with three other movie producers to create original action shows, the story adds.

The change comes as pay-TV networks no longer attract viewers with Hollywood movies, the article adds.

  1. NOOOO! Say it isn’t so! What will I do now for my late-night thrills?

  2. My beef with C-Max is they just swap out movies already premiered on HBO. Everybody who has HBO get Cinemax so they are not fooling anyone. Every other week the new HBO movie is last weeks Cinemax movie and vice versa. Its a total rip off!
