Video: GLAAD Calls on ‘Saturday Night Live’ to Apologize for Transgender Spoof Commercial

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is calling on "Saturday Night Live" to apologize for spoof commercial that advertised an estrogen drug for male-to-female transgender people, reports New York Magazine’s Vulture blog.

The spoof–seen below–stars Bill Hader advertising a drug called Estro-Maxx and parodies pharmaceutical ads, the story notes. "There were no ‘jokes’ per se; all the laughs came from the commercial’s offensive and dehumanizing portrayals of transgender women," said GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios in a statement. "By telling its audience that transgender women should be laughed at and ridiculed, NBC contributed to an environment that sees transgender people subjected to near-universal discrimination in the workplace and an environment in which at least one transgender person is murdered every month."

GLAAD has an online petition asking NBC to issue an apology, the story notes, and for the spot to be taken off the Internet.

The story did not carry any response from NBC or "SNL."

  1. Ugh. I’m gay. Not trans. I do hate that we’re lumped together. Anyways, I’m so sick of GLAAD’s lack of sense of humor. It’s meant to be funny. GLAAD and HRC are becoming like the boy who cried wolf. You complain about everything, when something really bad happens, no one will listen.
