MTV Series Gets Green Light for 25th Season — The Show Has Been Rolling Along Since the 1990s

MTV announced plans today for the 25th season of a show that has been airing on the cable channel since the 1990s. The show is "The Challenge," which originated in 1998 as "Real World/Road Rules Challenge."

In a press release detailing plans for season 25, MTV said: "On the heels of a stellar season of ‘The Challenge: Rivals II,’ MTV today announced that the hit competition series will start production this fall, for its 25th season of the franchise, in an undisclosed location. Past locales have included Thailand, Brazil, Dominican Republic and more. The new season is slated to air in 2014."

The cable net noted that the finale of "Rivals II" was up 54% from last season’s “The Challenge: Battle of the Seasons” finale, with a 2.0 P12-34 rating and 2.2 million total viewers. Overall, ratings for the latest season were up 27% vs. the previous year, averaging a 1.9 P12-34 rating and 2.1 million total viewers.

Accounting for time-shifted viewing (Live+SD vs. Live+3), the average ratings for the season increased 36% (1.4 Live+SD vs. 1.9 Live+3 among P12-34).
