A new reality series from NBC and Mark Burnett takes that old phrase from ‘Star Trek,’ "space, the final frontier," literally.

NBC has ordered "Space Race," a competition from Mark Burnett that will feature ordinary people trying to win a trip on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, reports The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed blog.

SpaceShipTwo is the commercial spaceline from Sir Richard Branson.

"The scope of this endeavor is so staggering, that it took these two titans to even imagine it," said Paul Telegdy, NBC Entertainment president of alternative and late night programming, according to the story.

Burnett previously sold a show about space in 2000, when he sold "Destination Mir" to NBC. The series would have taken an ordinary American to the Mir space station, but the project was scuttled when Mir was brought down the following year, the story points out.

The article adds this quote from Burnett: "For the past 10 years I have relentlessly pursued my dream of using a TV show to give an everyday person the chance to experience the black sky of space and look down upon Mother Earth.".

Seats on Virgin Galactic cost $250,000 each.

The story also notes that Branson said," ‘Space Race’ allows us to extend this opportunity of a lifetime to as many people as possible right at the start of our commercial service — through direct experience and television viewing."
