CBS rolled out its new drama series “Stalker” and ABC aired the second installment of its high-profile new comedy series “black-ish” Wednesday night in two of the most closely watched ratings stories of the night.

The news was pretty good for CBS, as “Stalker,” which delivered a 2.0 average in the key 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen overnights, joined a lineup that was solid enough to win the demo for the night — while CBS also cruised to a fairly comfortable win in total viewers.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that CBS averaged a 2.4 rating in 18-49 for prime time to edge ABC’s 2.2 average. The premiere of “Criminal Minds” (2.7 average, off 4% from last year’s premiere) and week two of “Survivor” (2.4, down 11% from the season premiere) did the heavy lifting for CBS, but “Stalker’s” 2.0 at 10 p.m. equaled the number delivered in the time period by the fall premiere of “CSI” a year ago.

ABC’s two-hour comedy block was down across the board from last week’s premieres, with the most troubling result being a 2.5 average in the 18-49 demo for “black-ish,” which lost 24% from its premiere. “The Middle” fell 14% to a 1.9, “The Goldbergs” dipped 4% to a 2.2 and “Modern Family” declined 10% to a 3.5 — still easily the top show of the night on broadcast prime.

ABC’s 10 p.m. drama “Nashville” held steady with last week’s premiere, delivering another 1.5 average in 18-49 while finishing third in the slot behind “Stalker” and NBC’s “Chicago PD.”

Speaking of NBC, the network’s drama lineup was down from a week ago, with “The Mysteries of Laura” slipping 7% in the 18-49 demo to a 1.4 average, “Law & Order: SVU” tumbling 18% from the premiere to a 1.8 and “Chicago PD” falling 16% to a 1.6 as the Peacock settled for third place overall in the demo.

Fox trailed its big four rivals, with “Hell’s Kitchen” averaging a 1.4 in viewers 18-49, up 8% from a week ago, and “Red Band Society” holding steady with a 1.1.

For prime time overall, CBS was on top in adults 18-49 with a 2.4 average rating, followed by ABC (2.2 average), NBC (1.6), Fox (1.2), Univision (1.1) and CW (0.2). CBS also led in total viewers with 10.026 million, ahead of NBC (7.794 million), ABC (6.995 million), Fox (3.587 million), Univision (2.857 million) and CW (686,000).
