Are TV Viewers Sexist? Morning Anchor Does an Experiment to Find Out

Nov 18, 2014  •  Post A Comment

A morning TV host undertook an unusual experiment to determine whether his female co-host is subject to a different standard regarding her attire, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Karl Stefanovic, who co-hosts Australia’s “Today” show, intentionally wore the same blue suit almost every day for the past year, except for a few days when it was being dry cleaned, the story reports.

No one ever commented on his unchanging attire, he said. Stefanovic didn’t at first tell his “Today” co-host Lisa Wilkinson what he was doing, although he informed her about a month into the experiment, the story notes.

At the same time, Wilkinson was receiving letters, emails and tweets about her wardrobe, hairstyle and makeup.

“No one has noticed; no one gives a shit,” Stefanovic told Fairfax Media. “But women, they wear the wrong color and they get pulled up. They say the wrong thing and there’s thousands of tweets written about them.”

“I’m judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humor — on how I do my job, basically,” he added, “whereas women are quite often judged on what they’re wearing or how their hair is.”

Here’s a video featuring every suit Stefanovic has worn on the program during 2014:
