DreamWorks Animation is headed overseas with a major initiative. The company is launching the DreamWorks Channel in 19 Asian markets, including South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong — although it is not entering the biggest market, China, The New York Times reports.
The network could be up and running by June, The Times reports. HBO Asia will handle its affiliate sales, marketing and technical services.
The programming will include DreamWorks Animation series such as “How to Train Your Dragon” and the preschool show “VeggieTales in the House,” The Times notes.
The report points out that the exclusion of China, which the paper calls “the most coveted market,” is “in keeping with the difficulties other American entertainment companies — notably Disney — have had navigating that country’s government controls on media.”
