Top Execs Reveal How HBO Just Recorded Its Biggest Subscription Growth in 30 Years
Richard Plepler, the CEO of pay-cable channel HBO, says the channel’s subscriber base surged in 2014 — and he knows why.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Plepler cited the network’s new subscription VOD deal with Amazon Prime, which made older HBO programming available on the streaming service.
Plepler and Jeff Bewkes, CEO of HBO parent company Time Warner, alluded to the deal during Time Warner’s earnings call Wednesday. Bewkes noted that the arrangement has a “catalytic effect,” driving consumers back to HBO.
Added Plepler: “We had the biggest sub growth last year any time in 30 years. I think there [are] a lot of factors that contributed to that. Amazon might have been one of them, because people have an opportunity to see what they previously haven’t seen.”
