The Federal Communications Commission is getting tough on telemarketers. “The top U.S. telecommunications regulator wants to make it harder for telemarketers and other businesses to place unwanted robocalls and text messages under changes to autodialing rules proposed on Wednesday,” Reuters reports.
The panel will vote on the plan June 18. The proposal “would give legal cover to telephone companies to offer consumers technologies that would block robocalls, regardless of where they originate,” the story reports.
In a blog post, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said: “The FCC wants to make it clear: Telephone companies can — and in fact should — offer consumers robocall-blocking tools.”
Reuters adds: “The wireless carriers have worried that blocking automated calls could be construed as violations of the law that requires them to ensure that all calls placed over their networks reach their intended recipients.”
I’m sorry, but 1) FCC action is long overdue, and 2) shouldn’t the government be shutting these folks down for good? If I hear “Hi, this is Rachel from Cardmember Services” or “Hello, Seniors” one more time I will want to shove down the throat of the head of the consumer protection division. These calls should be illegal – why bother having a Do Not Call List.
Why did it take this long?
You get “Rachel from Cardmember Services” and Hello Seniors too? I have been receiving those calls on my cell phone sometimes 3 times a week, and they are not sales calls, they are not selling anything at all, but collecting your data. Every time I get one of those calls, the number in the caller ID has been spoofed, and is NEVER a real, working number. I always file a complaint with the FCC, so the FCC has DOZENS of complaints from me. And more than two years later, I’m still getting these calls. And I’m sure I will continue getting them ad nauseum, especially since the FCC wants to DECREASE the size of its enforcement division. So, if I may rephrase a line from a song by Michael Palin (Monty Python, not the Alaska Palins) “so thank you very much the FCC.”
I really hope it would stop them to bother our days. I always tired of hung up my phone on those calls. They always change their numbers, but always talk the same thing. Looks like it’s not just me, I found hundreds of same complaints about these bot calls at http://whycall.me. They always make me mad if they start to call like 3-4 times a day.
843-209-1822 and like numbers will call my cell phone and will not speak when I say hello. This seems like
harassment to me. This happens twice a week.
