It’s the story of how a well-known rock star, thanks to an early investment in Facebook, has managed to top former Beatle Paul McCartney as the world’s richest pop star.
According to the New York Post’s Page Six, “Back in 2009, U2’s Bono bought a 2.3 percent share of Facebook for nearly $76 million through Elevation Partners, an investment company he cofounded.”
Says the U.K. tabloid The Mirror — the source of the Post story: “Today that share is worth a whopping £940 million [$1.4 billion], according to reports. That means that Bono’s venture has earned him more in the last six years than the whole of his incredible music career.”
The Mirror says that runner-up McCartney is worth $1.1 billion, and Madonna, in third place among pop stars, is worth $797 million.
