Seth Meyers Tweaks Format of ‘Late Night’

Aug 11, 2015  •  Post A Comment

Seth Meyers ditched a regular feature of his NBC show “Late Night” on Monday, a move that some critics have been suggesting for months. Instead of opening with his monologue, Meyers began Monday’s show seated at his desk, commenting on the news — not unlike the role that became familiar to fans of “Saturday Night Live,” where Meyers was one of the hosts of the “Weekend Update” segment.

Entertainment Weekly notes that Meyers, who has been hosting “Late Night” since February 2014, has been getting “mixed reviews for his monologues,” with a number of critics calling for a change.

Here’s a clip of Monday’s opening segment:

  1. I watch Seth every night. I admit, he started somewhat roughly and you could always tell whether he was talking or reading the cue cards. When he was reading, his voice went up an octave! But he’s gotten much better over time, and I’ve enjoyed how he covers a flop in his monologue. Funny thing, though. Last night, I was 5 minutes late and missed the monologue…. And it’s not showing here, either!
