Advertisers Pull Out From ‘The View’ After Controversial Segment

The ABC show “The View” has lost national advertisers in the wake of a poorly received segment earlier this week.

The New York Daily News reports that Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best pulled out of the daytime talk show over a segment in which two co-hosts mocked Sunday’s monologue by Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson during the Miss America pageant. (Johnson’s monologue can be seen below.)

Johnson chose not to do more traditional song-and-dance material during the talent portion of the pageant, opting to appear in nurse’s scrubs with a stethoscope and deliver a monologue about the value of nurses.

It didn’t sit well with “The View” hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar, who criticized Johnson on the air.

Collins commented sarcastically, “Shockingly (she) did not win,” the report notes. Behar chimed in with: “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?”

The comments became the target of a backlash on social media, prompting the two co-hosts to apologize on Wednesday’s program.

Johnson & Johnson issued a statement today saying: “Johnson & Johnson values and appreciates nurses and we respect the critical role they play in our health care system. We disagree with recent comments on daytime television about the nursing profession and we have paused our advertising accordingly.”

Eggland’s Best also released a statement, saying in part: “In light of the comments … we will no longer be advertising on the show in question.”

Here’s a clip of Johnson’s monologue from the Miss America pageant:

  1. Touchy, touchy. Seriously, one bad, ad-libbed moment and advertisers pull their stuff off The View? And yet Honey Boo Boo and mind-numbing reality shows stay on the air for years until a criminal scandal. Go figure.

  2. Writer guy, the same could be said about Don Imus when he was railroaded by fat Al Sharpton

  3. I am glad that these companies are standing up for the nurses.

  4. Glad these companies are standing behind these nurses

  5. Just cancel the show. It’s so bad these days. The current hosts (except for Joy and Whoopi) are dumb..they add nothing ….

  6. This bad excuse for a television program repeatedly proves itself to be total garbage. The hosts are all clueless, worthless idiots. — And WriterGuy above, you are an ignorant douchebag.

  7. What a wonderful role model for young adults! Congratulations to Kelly!

  8. The view has become a propaganda machine for the liberal agenda. These host should remember that “words matter”. Freedom of speech and opinion are fundamentally important in America but the words one speaks can gave consequences..

  9. They did not criticize nurses but Ms. Johnson’s performance which certainly cannot be considered “talent”.

  10. It was so much more than just the sarcastic and ignorant “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?” question.
    * It was the Mean Girls way in which they all approached this topic that was ONLY aired to ridicule and mock Miss Colorado and all nurses in general. That was the purpose of this segment on the program. Period. *
So, it backfired. And nurses everywhere are fired up, as they should be. Nurses have united like never before. It’s awe-inspiring. Check it out on facebook – “Show me your stethoscope”
Joy Behar – pack your bags. Your Mean Girl gig is up. You are a snarky aging woman who is no longer amusing. But the funny thing is, you’ll need a nurse some day – when you are hospitalized and critically ill – and that nurse will no doubt show you the compassion that is in a nurse innately. Maybe then you will understand a fraction of what a nurse is.

  11. I am retired nurse of over 40 years and I see no wrong that occurred on The View to the point of Nurses acting in such a thin-skinned manner. These women who are comedians and use to making quips about most subjects, and spoke in jest, perhaps ignorant jest, but not so badly as for the program to lose sponsors, and for Nurses to be unforgiving. Nurses are tougher than this and more mature, and I am disappointed my younger sisters are so thin-skinned and vindictive. The View said they were sorry, so now lets us Nurses show our maturity of spirit and forgive these women who definitely meant no harm, and who have always been supportive of nurses. You’re acting like vengeful cry babies. We’re much bigger than this type of behavior.

  12. The women on The View are vicious, mean-spirited, self-centered individuals, for sure. I agree that they are the epitome of mean girls trying to be “popular” by putting down other women and men. They have no intelligence, manners, or any inkling of professionalism. I hate that my daughter watches them and considers them news sources. They are so liberal and unfairly biased, it’s sickening. What ever happened to women supporting women?
