Actor Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, who were being held in Vermont on charges of being fugitives from justice in California, were released from custody today when a judge unexpectedly ruled that Vermont had no legal reason to hold them, USA Today reports.

Judge Alison Arms reportedly dismissed fugitive charges against the couple during court proceedings today, after apparently having a change of heart.

“Arms initially reduced bail for Randy Quaid and Evi Quaid to $50,000 and said the ‘Independence Day’ star and his wife must stay in Vermont if released from jail while facing fugitive-from-justice and other charges in Santa Barbara,” the story reports. “But after a brief recess of no more than 10 minutes, Judge Arms returned to court, summoned the lawyers and the Quaids, said she reviewed paperwork from California and determined there was no legal basis for the Quaids’ continued incarceration in Vermont.”

The couple had been held since Friday, when they were arrested while crossing the border from Canada into Vermont. Under today’s ruling, they face no conditions and were not required to post bail.

“Randy Quaid told reporters he is looking forward to staying in Vermont for the time being and wants to join the volunteer fire department in the town of Lincoln,” USA Today notes.
