Young Girl’s Complaint Sparks Change in ‘Star Wars’ Monopoly Game

Jan 7, 2016  •  Post A Comment

After an 8-year-old girl noticed something was missing from the “Star Wars” version of Monopoly, Hasbro announced that it is changing the game. AP reports that the girl, Annie Rose Goldman of Evanston, Ill., wrote a letter pointing out that the game was missing a female character.

Goldman’s letter was posted on Twitter this week by her mom. In it, the youngster pointed out that the game was missing Rey, the heroine of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” “Without her there is no ‘Force Awakens’! It awakens in her!” Annie Rose wrote. “And without her, the bad guys would have won! Besides, boys and girls need to see that women can be as strong as men! Girls matter!”

The article notes that the original game features four characters, all of them male, patterned after Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Finn and Kylo Ren. The exclusion of Rey has been a topic on social media.

Hasbro responded two days after the letter was posted, answering in a tweet that said: “We love your passion for Rey and are happy to share that we are including her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game, available later this year.”

  1. So sick of this.

Has or has made several announcements as to why Rey was not included (to avoid giving away the importance of the character before the movie’s release) but now they will “change their minds in response to a “little girl’s letter.”

    Such a blatant PR stunt.

  2. Bill – I think your explanation (and Hasbro’s) for Rey’s invisibility in the Star Wars merchandising is disingenuous, to say the least. I mean, Darth Vader isn’t even in the movie, and Luke’s only a cameo. So it’s okay to “give away the importance” of Finn and the movie’s villain, but not the freaking star of the movie? Yeah, right.
