A popular prime-time broadcast sitcom is taking the plunge into the volatile issue of police brutality. Specifically, tonight’s installment of ABC’s “black-ish” tackles brutality targeting African Americans, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The episode is titled “Hope.”

The report notes that the series, which stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne, has already examined the N-word and issues involving racial identity. Tonight’s episode “pulls no punches in lashing out against police, and underscores cases in which unarmed black males have been targeted and killed at the hands of law enforcement,” the Times reports.

Says series creator Kenya Barris, who wrote tonight’s episode: “I’m very nervous about this episode — the most nervous I’ve ever been. I worry about the comedy. I had to do a balancing act to show that we are not trivializing the issue, but we also didn’t want to politicize the show.”

  1. Norman Lear pioneered this territory 40 years ago. Here’s hoping you’re a worthy successor.
