A former host on MTV who was also a professional athlete has been found dead in an apparent suicide. MTV reports that Dave Mirra was found Thursday in his truck in Greenville, N.C.
Mirra, who was a pro BMX athlete and also competed in motorsports as a rallycross racer, was 41.
A statement Thursday from the Greenville Police Department said: “At approximately 4pm today, Greenville Police responded to the 200 block of Pinewood Road for an apparent suicide. Upon arrival, officers discovered Dave Mirra, 41, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.”
Mirra hosted MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge” for two seasons, in 2004 and 2005.
MTV adds: “Mirra was one of the most decorated athletes in X Games history — until 2013, he held the world record for most X Games medals. He medaled in every X Game from 1995 to 2008, finishing his career with 24 total medals, 14 of which were gold.”
