Christie Defends His Appearance at Trump Event, Says He Wasn’t Being Held Hostage

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose “bewildered gaze” during Donald Trump’s victory speech on Super Tuesday became an Internet meme, defended the appearance today and insisted that he was not being held hostage, as many Internet commenters speculated.

NBC News reports that Christie addressed the controversy during a press conference in New Jersey. “No, I was not being held hostage,” Christie told reporters. “No, I was not sitting up there thinking, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?'”

Christie apparently stopped short of explaining his somewhat distant appearance, but insisted: “I wasn’t upset, I wasn’t angry, I wasn’t despondent. I wasn’t anything other than happy that we had done as well as we had done that night, and listening to someone giving a press conference in front of the national press corps.”

  1. He claims he is the Governor of NJ, but to most of us, he has been MIA for the past 18 months.

  2. “No, I was not sitting up there thinking, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’”

Yes, you were. It was as plain as the look on your face.

  3. (Inside Chris Christie’s head): I lost to THIS d-bag?

  4. The biggest comedy of this election season is the frustration of the press and establishment politicians deperation to find something to slow Trump down. They are terrified someone will win that won’t play their game.
