Will Mitt Romney Be the GOP’s Trumpbuster? Here’s the First Big Salvo in His Effort to Torpedo the Party’s Front-Runner

Mar 3, 2016  •  Post A Comment

2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney resurfaced today with an impassioned speech that many see as the first salvo in the GOP’s new offensive against its presidential front-runner Donald Trump.

CNN reports that Romney “delivered a sweeping broadside against Donald Trump on Thursday, laying into the Republican presidential front-runner with a sharper attack than any of the party’s 2016 contenders have made against the billionaire business mogul.” The report adds: “Romney said that ‘dishonesty is Donald Trump’s hallmark,’ pointing to his ‘bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third-grade theatrics.'”

CNN also notes: “There’s irony in Romney’s speech: Just four years ago, he courted Trump’s endorsement — even after Trump had led the ‘birther’ controversy against President Barack Obama, insisting that Obama release his birth certificate to prove he is an American citizen.”

Here’s just a taste of what Romney had to say …

  1. I always liked Mr. Romney and would have liked to have seen him be a winner of his shot at the Whitehouse. Instead he was a gracious and good loser. But as Vince Lombardi said and Mr. Romney today proved “Show me a good loser and I show you a loser”. His performance was obscene! To pretend to have a larger motive when the real purpose of his comments is to preserve the croney government the established Republican party has become, is disgraceful. Today we saw an otherwise good and reverent man lay down in the gutter with people that put themselves ahead of the American people and our wonderful country. Shame on you Mr. Romney.

  2. We have personal experience with the Romney family … they (including Mitt), are the most real, kind and legit people in the whole scene. The Mormon culture teaches their kids honesty, healthy living habits and how to be a good neighbor … including sending their young adults into the world on 2 year missions to help other communities and cultures (I, as someone who was raised Catholic, love this culture and people).

Trump has been an entertainer, an arrogant and rude “Bulldozer” who mows down his opponents in ruthless fashion, he threatens to sue everyone … he bashes “ugly people”, gay people like Rosie O’Donnell and numerous other people. Do we need someone who is this unstable and erratic to run our country ? I wish Mitt was back in the running.

  3. one more thing … Reality Check is an idiot !

    • D. Phillips-

Spoken in true Democratic fashion! I’ll take the “idiot” label coming from you as a badge of honor! You expounded on how good the Romney family is and until Mitt rolled in the gutter I would have agreed with you. But the evidence of Mitt’s untruthfulness was presented in the video. As a candidate Mitt cherished Trump’s endorsement and money. He lavished praise on the man for his business acumen and had not a single utterance of negative opinion. For Mitt to become a puppet of the Republican establishment and now say things diametrically opposed to his comments only 4 years ago, begs the question – was he lying then or now? In either case he is still a liar and not the man I thought he was during his campaign. Thanks again for the “idiot” endorsement. That has the same effect as Mitt’s diatribe against Trump. People do realize the when someone is aware that their message is weak or wrong they use personal attacks to try to bolster their position. Much like we see all the candidates doing in every debate!

      • How can you criticize Romney for contradicting himself and not hold Trump to the same standard? There are numerous pieces of tape showing Trump contradicting himself, on multiple occasions and regarding multiple issues, yet you continue to support him and don’t consider him a liar. And by the way, I would think Romney is not the only person who has changed his mind about Trump after witnessing his antics over the past several months.

This is what drives me crazy about Trump supporters. No matter what he says or does, they continue to defend and support him. What could he possibly do at this point to lose your support? He’s already “joked” that he could murder someone in Times Square and not lose a single supporter, and sadly I think he was right about that.

  4. Romney’s right.

  5. This string is ridiculous. Romney is hoping for a brokered convention, where he will end up the nominee. That level of ego is beyond even Trump’s. The most amazing thing is that Romney has fallen for the party’s line that it could even happen. Last night, even his opponents admitted that they would support Trump if he won the nomination. The question is will the Republican’s be willing to support Trump or will they prefer to keep someone who is better at playing the Washington greed game – Hillary.
