The life of a man who generated intense controversy through his work is at the center of the new documentary “Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures,” premiering tonight on HBO.

TVWeek Open Mic writer Hillary Atkin reports that the movie provides an uncensored look at photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who famously documented New York City’s bondage underground in the 1970s — sparking intense scrutiny from his critics and calls from lawmakers to cut funding for the arts.
