The No. 2 daily newspaper in the state of New Jersey will be acquired by Gannett, according to a report by The New York Post. The report cites sources saying Gannett will buy the North Jersey Media Group, which owns The Bergen Record along with a number of weekly papers.
The Record is 121 years old and trails only the Star-Ledger in Newark in circulation in the state. “Gannett, the nation’s No. 1 newspaper publisher, owns the Asbury Park Press and five other New Jersey papers,” The Post notes.
The report adds: “The news sent a jolt through the Record newsroom. Beleaguered staffers, who have survived recent rounds of belt-tightening without getting a raise in years, were stunned.”
The NY Post report is 11 days old. No announcement has been made so far.
