Ricky Gervais, who was behind the original U.K. series “The Office” on which the NBC comedy was based, is open for business again. Gervais is reprising the uber-awkward role of David Brent in a new movie that will stream on Netflix.
Gervais created, wrote and directed the original series along with his longtime collaborator Stephen Merchant. The show ran from 2001-2003 in the U.K., and was followed by NBC’s U.S. adaptation starring Steve Carell, which wrapped its nine-season run in 2013.
The new project is “David Brent: Life on the Road,” a feature-length project that finds a documentary crew catching up with Brent 12 years after the period in which the U.K. series was set, with Brent now pursuing the dream of becoming a rock star.
The movie, from Entertainment One, will premiere on Netflix in 2017 in the U.S. It will have a theatrical release this summer in the U.K., Australia and other territories.
Gervais commented: “I’m so glad the mighty Netflix have once again outbid all competitors in North America to show my movie exclusively. It is the perfect platform for me, giving complete creative freedom and also millions of instant viewers who can watch again and again. I can’t wait for David Brent to follow it up with his US live tour!”
