CBS’s new “Star Trek” series is getting a high-profile jump-start, with an all-star gathering of luminaries from the “Trek” universe set to appear at this month’s Comic-Con in San Diego.

Variety reports that William Shatner, who played Capt. Kirk in The Original Series, will headline the panel of past “Star Trek” cast members, with Bryan Fuller set to moderate.

“The Hall H panel will also feature Michael Dorn (‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’), Brent Spiner (‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’), Jeri Ryan (‘Star Trek: Voyager’) and Scott Bakula (‘Star Trek: Enterprise’),” Variety reports. “Set to take place Saturday, July 23 at 2 p.m. PT, ‘Star Trek: Celebrating 50 Years’ is one of several events scheduled for Comic-Con to celebrate the ‘Star Trek’ franchise’s 50th anniversary.”

But the event is also a part of the CBS promotional push behind its upcoming “Star Trek” series, which will premiere on the broadcast network in January 2017, with subsequent episodes to run on the CBS All Access service. The series, which does not yet have a title, will be executive produced by Fuller.

Comic-Con will feature a number of other “Star Trek” promotions, including the art exhibit “50 Artists. 50 Years.” Additionally, the Paramount feature film “Star Trek Beyond” will premiere during the convention.

  1. I still don’t understand the release strategy. After the pilot, how does exclusive carriage on All Access paid subs make up for freely accessible Broadcast eyeball Ad Sales Revenue? Especially with the Star Trek being a tech-heavy viewer draw, I’d image the episodes are going to be consumed en mass through torrents and not through the legit service. Still, props for trying something different…

  2. Like you,, I do not think it will either. It will be bootlegged over the net, probably as much as Game of Thrones. It will be an expensive show to produce. The international sales will have to make up the cost of producing the series. At least our neighbors to the north should get it via OTA. I know I won’t be paying for a streaming service.
