NBCU Accused of ‘Double Standard’ Treatment of Talent at NBC and Telemundo

NBCUniversal is being accused of a double standard in its treatment of talent at the NBC broadcast network and the company’s Spanish-language outlet Telemundo.

Deadline.com reports that the SAG-AFTRA trade union is calling on the company to end disparities in labor conditions. The report notes that Telemundo is not signed to the union’s contract.

In a statement, SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said: “Despite Telemundo’s bravado as a champion of diversity, inclusion and empowerment for the Hispanic American community, the company’s actions behind the scenes tell a much different story. In addition to treating its Spanish-language talent as second-class citizens, Telemundo has actively employed tactics to dissuade talent from obtaining union protections. SAG-AFTRA strongly opposes such tactics, and I speak for concerned performers and citizens across the country when I say that we stand with Telemundo performers facing this injustice.”

Telemundo responded with a statement in which it said: “We remain committed to making Telemundo a great place to work for our employees and will continue to invest in them to ensure their salaries and working conditions are competitive. We are dedicated to Telemundo’s long-term success, which has created hundreds of high-value jobs and provided a valuable service to the Hispanic community in the United States.”

Deadline adds: “The union’s efforts to organize Telemundo are part of an initiative that seeks to end what it calls ‘the double-standard practices of Spanish-language television.’”

  1. Unions suck and are an antiquated thing of the past that seem to only protect the lazy and incompetent. They also drive up costs. Talent has managers and agents to negotiate working conditions like getting the privilege to sit in front of a camera in an air condition studio for lots of money. Sorry. I think that the hear folks could think outside of the union mentality box and create something good for the elves..

  2. Themselves. ?
