For the First Time in Its 111-Year History, Variety Endorses a Presidential Candidate

Nov 2, 2016  •  Post A Comment

Variety is going where it has never gone before, endorsing a presidential candidate for the first time in the publication’s 111-year history. The publication this week endorsed Hillary Clinton.

“While it is commonplace for mass-market newspapers like The New York Times and The Washington Post to endorse candidates, that’s not the case for trade publications,” Variety wrote. “But this year, the editors-in-chief and our publisher, Michelle Sobrino-Stearns, feel strongly that we should buck tradition and take a public stance on this historic election; for the same reason that The Atlantic endorsed Clinton (marking only the third time since its 1857 founding to back a candidate), we didn’t want to sit on the sidelines and come down on the wrong side of history.”

Among the many factors behind Variety’s decision, the article notes: “We believe that Clinton is not only the best candidate for the job, but the only candidate. As many endorsements have noted, she has the experience and temperament necessary to make a truly effective president. In fact, it’s hard to think of any presidential candidate with the depth of knowledge and public-service record she has.”

Commenting on her rival, Variety adds: “Donald Trump lacks the experience, knowledge, and diplomacy to hold public office. His run for the presidency can be viewed as nothing more than a ploy to land another TV deal or launch a new cable channel so he can continue spewing his sexist, racist views.”

  1. This, in my opinion is a bad business decision.

  2. Why is this a bass business decision?

The “Duck Dynasty” demographic isn’t where Variety’s readers are.

  3. Jim you my friend are an idiot.

  4. So, Variety is making a statement by endorsing the most corrupt politician our country has ever nominated for President. Jim, you are correct: This is a bad business decision.

  5. Are we supposed to care what Variety says, does or thinks?

  6. I agree with Jim. But this isn’t surprising. Why would Variety break their 111 years of endorsing a presidential candidate?

Because they see Trump is on track to defeat Hillary and the Variety top brass want to make all the studio heads happy. Although Hilary is overwhelmingly corrupt, who is profiting off our democracy by ‘pay-for-play’, who has had failure after failure (Benghazi, Russia ‘reset button’, ISIS, etc.) and is ALWAYS dogged by controversy (Whitewater, Clinton Foundation, cattle futures, email deletions, etc.) – the only reason why Variety is doing this is because they want to make the studio heads happy in order to get access to future stories for their magazine/website. The studio heads want Hillary because they get backend government deals (i.e. – tax incentives for filming). The studio heads will make more money only if Hillary is in office – NOT Trump.

How can any level headed person, celebrity or company endorse/vote for Hillary? It’s easy – just follow the money.

  7. I’ll be very glad when this damn election is over!

  8. Again, why do we care what the folks living in make believe land think??

  9. I wonder how much the Clinton Foundation has paid for any of Clinton’s endorsements? Anyone know if a President can still hold office while they are in jail?

  10. The sound made by the marching boots to fascism….”Trump trump trump trump…..”

  11. A president can’t be prosecuted while holding office. The statutes of limitations are delayed until the term expires. Congress can impeach, so the Clinton’s will be the first couple to both be impeached. This election will not end on Election Day.
