The actress and singer who conquered Broadway with her performance as the original “Unsinkable Molly Brown” has died. The New York Times reports that Tammy Grimes died Sunday in Englewood, N.J. She was 82.
Grimes was 26 and largely unknown when she earned the part of Molly Brown in 1960. She wound up winning a Tony Award for her performance and went on to a distinguished career on the stage.
Grimes also went on to win another Tony, for “Private Lives,” in 1970.
She also appeared in movies, including “Play It as It Lays” and “Slaves of New York,” and briefly starred in her own ABC sitcom, “The Tammy Grimes Show,” in 1966.
