NBC is creating a new U.S. TV channel, which is due to launch in the second half of 2017. The AP reports that the channel will feature year-round Olympics programming.
The new channel, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, is the result of a deal announced today involving NBC and the U.S. and International Olympic Committees, which have reportedly been trying to make it happen for years.
The channel is seen as a complement to the IOC’s Olympic Channel, a worldwide digital platform that was set up following the Summer Olympics in Rio.
“About 10 years ago, the USOC proposed launching its own version of an Olympic channel but got a tepid response from both NBC and the IOC, which didn’t want outside competition to their own programing,” the AP notes. “NBC owns U.S. rights to televise the games through 2032.”
