This morning’s announcement of the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards produced the widely anticipated avalanche of nods for the musical “La La Land” — 14 total nominations, tying “Titanic” and “All About Eve” for the most in the history of the awards.

The nominations also appeared to help move the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences past the “Oscars so white” controversy that plagued the awards for the past couple of years, with a record six black actors nominated this year and a number of diverse films — notably “Fences,” “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight” — in the running for Best Picture.

A total of nine movies are nominated in the Best Picture category, including “La La Land” with its 14 total nominations, “Moonlight” with eight nods, “Fences” with four and “Hidden Figures” with three. The other Best Picture nominees are “Arrival,” “Hell or High Water,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”

The awards will be handed out Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, with the ceremony to be televised live on ABC. Please click here to see the full list of nominees.

  1. Where is Taraji Henson? She is the star of an Academy Award nominated movie and not nominated? Instead Meryl Streep plays a female version of Donald Trump, self-centered, ego driven, rich person who buys their way to the top with no real qualifications and gets nominated because she is Meryl Streep. The academy really hasn’t changed.
