Legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore, a television fixture whose career in the medium goes back to the 1950s, has died. Moore, a seven-time Emmy winner, became a familiar face to U.S. audiences through her roles on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” along with many other TV and feature film appearances.

TMZ.com reports that Moore died today in a hospital in Connecticut.

The report quotes a statement from Mara Buxbaum, the longtime rep for Moore, that says: “Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine.”

The statement adds: “A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”

TMZ notes that Moore had been on a respirator for more than a week.

“Mary — who battled diabetes and underwent brain surgery in 2011 — became famous after starring on the ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ from 1961 to 1966,” TMZ reports. “She dazzled her way to 7 successful seasons on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ from 1970 to 1977, decimating skeptics who viewed her show as destined to fail.”

Moore received an Oscar nomination for best actress in 1981 for “Ordinary People.” She was nominated for a total of 15 Primetime Emmys, winning seven, and also received nine Golden Globe nominations, winning three Globes.

Moore’s many industry honors included induction into the Television Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Comedy from the American Comedy Awards in 1987.

Early in her career, Moore was “Happy Hotpoint,” the dancer in the Hotpoint appliance commercials of the mid-1950s.

  1. Wasn’t it Mary’s great legs the walked down the street in the opening or Peter Gunn? Pretty much the only part of the series I remember! Always one of my favorite performers.

  2. I believe it was the “Richard Diamond” detective series.
