Stephen Colbert Under Fire Over Donald Trump Joke

May 2, 2017  •  Post A Comment

CBS late-night host Stephen Colbert is in the hot seat over a joke targeting Donald Trump during Monday night’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Variety reports that the joke is being called homophobic.

“During his opening monologue, Colbert went off on Trump over the President’s treatment of CBS News’ John Dickerson, who saw an interview with Trump abruptly ended when he asked about the President’s unproven claims that then-President Obama had wiretapped Trump and members of his campaign,” Variety reports. “As Dickerson and Colbert are both CBS employees, Colbert felt it his duty to say the things Dickerson himself could not.”

The monologue can be seen in the clip below, posted by CBS. The line that is getting most of the attention is one in which Colbert says during a torrent of insults aimed at Trump: “The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.”

“The final remark has drawn the Internet’s ire, with viewers taking to social media to declare Colbert is homophobic,” Variety reports. “The hashtag #FireColbert began spreading around Twitter, along with calls for people to boycott sponsors of the late-night show.”

Below is the monologue. Around the 8:29 mark, things begin to break down in the Dickerson-Trump interview, and the torrent of insults by Colbert directed at Trump — including the (censored) controversial line — begins at about the 11:12 mark …

  1. Unfortunate. Should have been caught in the edit process and reviewed. But — still true

  2. This is inappropriate, and in very bad taste, but it is not discriminatory against any group. Colbert is way over the top in his attacks on Trump, but the way to stop that is to reduce his ratings and sponsors. Not make claims of discrimination. We saw it with O’Reilly and those that don’t like Colbert can take the same steps.

    • This. Vote with your remote.

    • PLEASE do not compare the very real crime of sexual harassment and O’Reilly having to pay out millions with a dick joke. Here’s the big difference. Colbert is paid to be funny and insulting and a bit of a clown. O’Reilly was not. HE was supposed to be a serious journalist. .LET’S not, EVER, confuse the two.

      • “HE was supposed to be a serious journalist.”

        ….
        ….
He was paid to give his opinions, not for reporting facts. That may not make him an entertainer, but it certainly doesn’t make him a journalist.

  3. Colbert should know…

  4. He is a comic & those jokes were not homophobic in any way. Goodness. How is he spoofing Drumpf’s adoration & sycophancy of Putin remotely phobic? I’m as big a gay as ever gayed and I am not offended. Go further, Colbert.

  5. I would love to know how that joke is REMOTELY anti-gay or homopbic. It IS anti-Trump. .Period. And before any of your straight folks try to lecture ME on homophobia, I am gay. And only in this country would people be MORE upset over a silly dick joke than they would…POSSIBLE TREASON. THAT isn’t going on a line? Hear yourselves!

  6. Colbert is starting to sound and behave like George Carlin in 2004 when he was run out of Las Vegas! That episode was followed by drug and alcohol rehab! Just this morning I saw that nearly 2,000 Trump associate Americans had their names unmasked by the Obama administration – so looks like Trump was right again. On Monday Colbert thought himself clever and funny, today we see he was angry and wrong again!

  7. I saw the monologue, and Colbert is SPOT ON. If the press won’t do their jobs, it’s up to late night comedians. Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. For a while yet, we still have a first amendment.

    • Scott – the issue is always that only the liberal Democrat speech is protected! If a conservative voice is raised they are demonstrated (rioted) against, shut down, have campus speaking engagements canceled and more. The lack of tolerance liberals exhibit is stunning! Colbert just wasn’t funny and many people (his own audience) found it vulgar, mean spirited and generally offensive. That is why it is an issue today.

  8. Only thing funny about Colbert is his ear!

  9. Colbert is a sad person. No comic ability other than President bashing, vulgarity and a string of sacrilegious remarks. And, all the time claiming to be a Christian. Stopped watching his program a few months ago. Also, searching to find his sponsors and no longer supporting them.
