The writers and producers behind BBC’s acclaimed series “Sherlock” are reuniting to put their stamp on the horror icon “Dracula.” Variety reports that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat will write the series, with Sue Vertue’s Hartswood Films producing.

“Work on the new series has yet to begin in earnest, as Gatiss and Moffat are currently working on solo projects. But talks are already under way with the BBC — which enjoyed huge success with ‘Sherlock’ — on broadcast rights in the U.K.,” the story reports.

The format will be similar to that of “Sherlock,” with a miniseries run consisting of feature-length episodes, the report notes. At this point, scripts are not yet written and casting is still well in the future.

  1. How does this fit with the new Universal Dark Universe series? I realize that the Mummy wasn’t the success they had hoped, but does this mean they are dropping out of the feature film side or are going to do a TV venture on the side like DC’s Flash?

  2. Dracula is in the public domain. Universal doesn’t own exclusive rights to Dracula or any of the other classic monsters like the Mummy, Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, The Wolf-man, Invisible Man, etc.. Anyone can make movies or television shows based on those characters.
