CNN Takes Heat Over Handling of Trump Wrestling Video Story

“A CNN story on Tuesday about an anonymous Reddit user who created a widely circulated video of President Trump wrestling the network’s logo to the ground has inspired multiple backlashes,” The New York Times reports. “Some criticized it as a form of blackmail. Others raised issues of journalism ethics over the network granting conditional anonymity to the user.”

“The 28-second video and its source have been the subject of questions since Sunday morning, when the president tweeted it as he continued his attacks on the news media,” the report adds.

The tweet, retweeted by Trump’s official presidential account, reportedly has become his most-shared post on Twitter.

“CNN said on Tuesday that it had found and spoken to the Reddit user, who had apologized for creating the video and other posts that were racist and anti-Semitic, including one that added Jewish stars to photos of CNN personalities. A CNN reporter, Andrew Kaczynski, said he had confirmed the user’s identity and had spoken to him by phone.”

Kaczynski’s article reportedly identified the Reddit user only as a “private citizen.”

“Mr. Kaczynski later said on Twitter that the Reddit user was a ‘middle-aged man,'” The Times reports. “CNN wrote in the article that it was not publishing the user’s name ‘because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.’”

  1. And it just keeps getting worse and worse for CNN.

  2. What this article by the NY Times didn’t reveal, about their buddies CNN, is the most chilling aspect of CNN’s action. CNN’s story basically said they won’t reveal the name of the person, as long as they don’t do something that CNN doesn’t like. And that is a perfect example of the definition of BLACKMAIL. BLACKMAIL is where you threaten to take certain actions if someone does not do perform in a way you want them to perform. This is frightening. Who they BLACKMAIL next? It probably will be someone we will never know about for sure. But it probably be someone whose behavior or actions are not consistent with their past behavior. What do you have in your past you wouldn’t want revealed? What would you be willing to do to keep CNN’s investigative reporters from revealing this information. This is FRIGHTENING.
