‘Game of Thrones’ Premiere Shatters Records

HBO’s hit fantasy series “Game of Thrones” flexed its ratings muscle with its season seven premiere Sunday, ranking as the most-watched premiere in HBO history.

The 9 p.m. telecast delivered 10.1 million linear viewers, The New York Daily News reports, citing Nielsen figures. The turnout smashed the mark of the season six premiere by 27%, and topped the record set by the season six finale, which drew 8.9 million viewers.

“While 10.1 million viewers is impressive, it’s believed the audience was actually much larger,” the report notes. “According to HBO, factoring in viewers who caught linear replays of the premiere or streamed it on HBO GO or HBO Now, the audience is closer to 16.1 million people — a 50% total increase over the Season 6 finale.”

“Game of Thrones” surpassed “The Sopranos” back in 2014 to become the most-watched show ever on HBO.

“At the time, the show was averaging a total of 18.4 million gross viewers across all platforms. The previous record was set at 18.2 million,” The Daily News reports. “Should ‘Game of Thrones’ continue on its current trajectory, it will likely shatter that record by the end of Season 7.”

  1. So, despite the “digital problems” plenty of normal people decided to watch the show in Hi-Def on their 60-inch TV’s. What a concept!!! 🙂

  2. Comparisons to Sopranos is not exact as that was the show that really started to get people other than boxing fans to subscribe to a pay cable channel. Not to take anything away from Thrones, as it is the show that is driving online viewing. Both shows have a special place in television history and it isn’t just defined by ratings.
