‘King Kong,’ the TV Show? Yes! … And That’s Just the Beginning

One explanation for why television seems to be drifting more than ever toward remakes, sequels, prequels and other familiar properties is that, with thousands of hours of scripted TV now in the marketplace, it’s more important than in the past to find “safe bets” that will cut through the clutter.

In a roundup of high-profile TV series currently in development, Stewart Clarke reports in Variety that many of the projects in the pipeline draw their inspiration from established works. Among them: a “Dracula” project from some of the people behind “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who”; a new “King Kong” live-action series from MarVista and IM Global; and a TV adaptation of John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” with “The Hobbit” star Martin Freeman behind the cameras and possibly to appear in the series.

A number of more original projects are also under way. We encourage readers to click on the link above to Variety for a glance at the upcoming shows.

  1. Safe bets like recycling haven’t worked. They aren’t a safe bet. One of the main reasons the networks are losing viewers is the lack of originality. Programs like The Americans and Fargo are being produced by FX, so it isn’t a cost issue. It is a lack of effort and creativity. Anne with an E was just released in Netflix. It is exactly the type of program that would do really well on Broadcast. But there is no effort for creative content.

    • Anne with an E (or just ANNE, as it is known in Canada) was made for Canadian national broadcast network TV (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “CBC” ). Netflix was brought in to help with deficit-financing. And you’re right – the program does do really well on broadcast.
