Kermit the Frog will be played by a new voice actor after being voiced since 1990 by Steve Whitmire. The Muppets fan site ToughPigs broke the news that Whitmire is out after voicing Kermit for 27 years.

In his place, Matt Vogel is taking over as the voice of Kermit, with his debut scheduled for next week in a “Muppets Thought of the Week” video. The Muppets Studio confirmed the news, but was not commenting on the reasons behind Whitmire’s exit.

Whitmire had been a Muppets mainstay since 1978, starting on ‘The Muppet Show.” Vogel has been involved with the Muppets since 1996.

“The irony that Matt previously performed Kermit imitator Constantine in ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ is not lost on us,” the website reports. “However, Matt has proven to be a talented and professional torch bearer for other classic characters, such as Floyd, Lew Zealand, and The Count, so we are intrigued to see how he will continue Kermit’s legacy.”
