An actress who was one of the key players in a secretive meeting between Mexican drug lord Juan “El Chapo” Guzman and actor Sean Penn will tell her side of the story in “The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story.” The three-part series premieres Oct. 20 on Netflix.

The series “tells Kate’s side of the story using never-before-seen footage and exclusive details of what led to the infamous meeting between one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, a Hollywood star and one of Mexico’s most famous television actresses,” Netflix said in announcing the project today.

Said del Castillo, the protagonist and executive producer of the series: “As an actress I’ve been given the opportunity to portray fascinating fictional characters, roles I am very proud of. Now I get the chance to tell my story, my reality, my truth. This project will dive into how it began, why I pursued accepting the rights to the life story of one of the most controversial narco figures and what happened after.”

The meeting between Penn and Guzman at the drug lord’s mountain hideout in October 2015, brokered by del Castillo, is cited by some observers as a factor in the subsequent capture of Guzman in January 2016, with Guzman’s interest in the actress cited as a key to his willingness to meet with Penn.

Said David Broome, series creator and executive producer: “I was extremely excited to delve into the craziest ‘life imitating art’ saga I’ve ever heard, a story wrapped around a core of complex social and political issues. I’m honored that Kate gave me the opportunity to tell her truth.”

The series is produced by 25/7 Productions and Kate del Castillo Productions. The executive producers include David Broome, Yong Yam and Kate del Castillo. The director of the series is Carlos Armella.
