What Is It About Celebrities and Airborne Sharks? Here Are the Cameos to Watch For in Sunday’s Fifth Installment of ‘Sharknado’

One of the most unlikely and most successful TV movie franchises — now with as many sequels as “Pirates of the Caribbean” — goes for another spin this Sunday on Syfy, when “Sharknado: Global Swarming” premieres.

In keeping with a “Sharknado” tradition, the fifth incarnation of the campy concept will be loaded with celebrity cameos.

“Filming took the cast and crew to Europe, Asia and Australia,” the AP reports. “This year’s cameos include Olivia Newton-John, Bret Michaels, Clay Aiken, Charo and Mexican weather girl Yanet Garcia.”

Unofficially, it has been reported that among the other celebs to expect are Fabio, Tony Hawk, Margaret Cho, Gilbert Gottfried, Greg Louganis and Chris Kattan … along with “Today” regulars Al Roker, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.

Series star Ian Ziering says he has trouble explaining the franchise’s success.

“Major motion picture studios spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to capture some of whatever it is that makes our little ‘Sharknado’ movie globally popular,” Ziering says. “It’s kind of like the secret sauce: No one really knows for sure. I wish I knew, I would be making my own movie.”

The cameos have become a big part of the “Sharknado” mystique. In “Sharknado 3” alone, the celebrity appearances included Ann Coulter, Ne-Yo, Lou Ferrigno, Lorenzo Lamas, Jackie Collins, Robert Klein, Anthony Weiner, Jerry Springer, Joey Logano, Max Kellerman, Marcellus Wiley, Matt Lauer, George R.R. Martin, Savannah Guthrie and Michele Bachmann, among many others.
