A veteran actor who has been a familiar presence in living rooms lately through his frequent appearances on commercials as the spokesman for Farmers Insurance has a new TV series.

J.K. Simmons — you know, the guy who says, “We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two” — will play two roles in the new spy thriller “Counterpart,” set to premiere Jan. 21 on Starz. Simmons won an Oscar in 2015 for his supporting role in “Whiplash.”

The new show comes from creator Justin Marks and MRC, and executive producers Gilbert Films and Anonymous Content. The series has a 10-episode order.

In an announcement today for the series, Starz says: “‘Counterpart’ is about a mysterious world hidden beneath the surface of our everyday existence. Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) is a lowly cog in the bureaucratic machinery of a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency. When Howard discovers that his organization safeguards the secret of a crossing into a parallel dimension, he is thrust into a shadow world of intrigue, danger, and double cross … where the only man he can trust is his near-identical counterpart from this parallel world. The show explores themes of identity, fate and lost love, posing the eternal question, ‘What if our lives could have been different?'”

“Counterpart” also features Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd, Nicholas Pinnock, Nazanin Boniadi, Sara Serraiocco and Ulrich Thomsen.

Production on the first season began in Los Angeles in 2016, and wrapped in Berlin earlier this year.

  1. Did J.K. throw the football at the thief on the bike or was it a stunt double or a former QB like one of the Hasselbeck brothers ? John ( a Farmers Auto Ins. customer )
