Fred Rogers, the man behind the iconic children’s host Mister Rogers, will be played by two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks. Variety reports that Hanks has signed on for the lead role in TriStar Pictures’ biopic “You Are My Friend.”

Marielle Heller (“Diary of a Teenage Girl”) will direct, with Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster writing the script.

“The film is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod,” Variety notes. “In the story, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed.”

Hanks has been nominated for five Oscars for Best Actor, winning in 1994 for “Philadelphia” and in 1995 for “Forrest Gump.”
