‘Sex and the City’ Actress Eyes Run for Governor of New York

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo could face a challenge from an actress with a famous political name — former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon.

The New York Times reports that Nixon — presumably no relation to President Richard Nixon — “has engaged in talks with a pair of veteran Democratic political operatives, a sign that she may be moving closer to a decision on whether to run this year, according to people familiar with the situation.”

The Times adds: “A longtime education activist, Ms. Nixon has also been studying up on other policy areas, in particular transportation policy, according to two people familiar with Ms. Nixon’s activities. The ongoing woes of New York City’s subway system, which are run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority — overseen by Mr. Cuomo — are widely seen as one of Mr. Cuomo’s greatest political vulnerabilities.”

“Ms. Nixon has been openly critical of Mr. Cuomo for many months as she has mulled a campaign,” The Times adds. “But her conversations with two Democratic strategists, Bill Hyers and Rebecca Katz, who are aligned with the party’s left flank in the state, appear to be a sign of her growing seriousness.”

Rebecca Capellan, Nixon’s publicist, wasn’t confirming anything, but said in a statement: “Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it. If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public.”

Nixon won an Emmy in 2004 for her portrayal of Miranda Hobbes on HBO’s “Sex and the City.”
