‘Superman’ Actor Apologizes for Rapist Comment

Jul 12, 2018  •  Post A Comment

An actor who has been playing Superman is doing damage control after coming under fire for his not-so-super comments about the #MeToo movement. Henry Cavill, who stars in “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” and has played Superman in “Man of Steel” and other feature films, apologized for the comments he made during an interview with GQ Australia.

Cavill got in hot water over remarks about how the #MeToo movement has made him afraid to flirt with women.

“It’s very difficult to do that if there are certain rules in place. Because then it’s like: ‘Well, I don’t want to go up and talk to her, because I’m going to be called a rapist or something.’ So you’re like, ‘Forget it, I’m going to call an ex-girlfriend instead, and then just go back to a relationship, which never really worked,’” Cavill told the publication, adding: “But it’s way safer than casting myself into the fires of hell, because I’m someone in the public eye, and if I go and flirt with someone, then who knows what’s going to happen?”

The New York Post’s Page Six reports that Cavill issued an apology after getting backlash over the interview.

“Having seen the reaction to an article in particular about my feelings on dating and the #metoo movement, I just wanted to apologize for any confusion and misunderstanding that this may have created,” he said in a statement quoted by The Post.

The statement adds: “Insensitivity was absolutely not my intention. In light of this I would just like to clarify and confirm to all that I have always and will continue to hold women in the highest of regard, no matter the type of relationship, whether it be friendship, professional, or a significant other.”

Cavill also says in the statement: “Never would I intend to disrespect in any way, shape or form. This experience has taught me a valuable lesson as to the context and the nuance of editorial liberties. I look forward to clarifying my position in the future towards a subject that is so vitally important and … which I wholeheartedly support.”

  1. Pussy, don’t apologize for telling the truth !! I agree with everything that you said.

  2. I’m sorry but, as horrible as what Cosby, Weinstein & the others did/have been accused of…it’s funny how no one asks why any of these women put themselves in such compromising one-on-one situations for the abuse to take place. Which, again, is not, in any way, condoning what took place, but does acknowledge that it was only made possible through their lack of Judgement and, perhaps, an attempt to forward their careers. Which, if true begs the question no one is asking, but should in this supposed era of gender equality and fairness, of who was using who?!

  3. SPOT ON !!!!!

  4. What the hell are you two talking about? I’m assuming you work or worked in the industry. If not let me enlighten you to the fact that it is common practice for production companies to set up temporary offices in hotel rooms, and yes legitimate auditions did and does take place there. Recently SAG-AFTRA, informed talent not to accept any request sent by, agents, managers, producers, etc., if it is to a hotel room, maybe unless they are accompanied by someone. The problem is that once through the door that is when one realizes if it is legit or otherwise. Khowse, your comments, especially, “…was only made possible through their lack of judgment” are insensitive and reeks of male stereotype and bias towards women. If you refuse to even acknowledge that you have that bias then you are an example of the problem. I have been in the industry for more than 30 years and not once have I met any woman who willingly put themselves in a compromising position, in “…an attempt to forward their careers”.

  5. Joseph, did you even read TFA? I was making a comment on the fact that he doesn’t even dare to say anything to a woman now, because of the backlash that he could receive. And guess what, he received it. There was no need for him to apologize for anything he said.
