Dish Warns That Blackout of Broadcaster ‘Could Become Permanent’

A contract dispute that has already resuted in Dish Network’s satellite and over-the-top Sling TV services dumping the Hispanic broadcaster Univision may never be resolved, according to Dish.

Variety reports that Dish said in a 10-Q regulatory filing today: “This removal could become permanent.”

Variety notes that on June 30, “after Dish and Univision failed to come to terms on a contract renewal, more than 60 Univision-owned stations and cable channels including UniMás and Galavision went dark on Dish’s pay-TV platforms.”

Dish reportedly noted that Univision’s programming is available via over-the-air antennas and over the Internet through the Univision Now subscription service.

“Dish’s comments on Univision came as the operator reported results for the second quarter of 2018,” Variety adds. “It shed 151,000 total pay-TV customers in the period, losing 192,000 satellite TV subs (to stand at 10.65 million total) and gaining 41,000 for Sling TV (2.34 million total). Its total TV base has shrunk 2.6% in the last 12 months — meaning the OTT side of the house is not making up for cord-cutting in the satellite biz.”

  1. Not sure if this is the right place to complain but I was wondering why the show Gunsmoke that ran for 20 years only airs the same 20 or so episodes over and over again on INSP, I am enjoying the series but keep seeing the same ones. Thank you for your time.

    • INSP has program purchasing budget that wouldn’t cover the cost of a Big Mac. Those 20 GUNSMOKE episodes are Public Domain, as is most of INSP’s classic TV programming.

  2. I have been a Dish customer for a very long time, 20 years. I have all the packages except the movie package. I know there has been a problem with Dish and Fox 14. when with this end? You have had all summer to work this out. My fall shows are about to start and without Fox 14 (which was included in the packages) is not available. I’m paying around $200 and not getting what I signed up for. When will this issue be solved? I been getting info from Direct TV and it includes Fox 14 at a much cheaper price. Not getting my channels I signed on for and paying much more is something I’m considering. Are we getting Fox 14 or is it dropped permanently?

  3. Customers has to be smarter, go to direct tv, and you will need happy for a moment, I have worked for dish for 16 year and 3 months; I am sure you will enjoy it at first, until you get your 7 month or years is up, then the bill will be pass on to you the customer. I thing work at the end.

  4. is dish working to resolve its conflict with abc ?
tired of missing my favorite shows while still paying full price for service

  5. If we cant get what were paying for when is the dish service going to decrease ?

  6. Go free. Two hundred a month times twelve. Better things to spend money on. I get all channels as my dad gets on direct. And my friend that has dish. Grab antenna. Good day.

  7. The cost of a 30-second commercial on the Super Bowl is 5.1 to 5.3 million dollars and I am told that there will be at least 52 creative commercials some running over 30 seconds with a gross total of over three hundred million dollars.
I certainly don’t know the cost of running the Super Bowl but I’m sure it’s not three hundred million dollars.
