NBC’s longest-running prime-time series is closing in on the premiere of a new season, and to kick things off Oxygen will run an all-day “Dateline: Secrets Uncovered” marathon leading up to the “Dateline NBC” premiere.

The venerable newsmagazine, which has aired more than 2,000 episodes, begins its 27th season this Friday, Sept. 28, with an episode titled “On the Outskirts of Town.”

“The series recently won across the board for the second consecutive season, delivering its biggest advantages over ABC’s ’20/20′ among total viewers, A25-54 and A18-49 in 15 years,” NBC said in today’s announcement. “Finishing its 25th season on Fridays, ‘Dateline’ continues to reign as the dominant Friday newsmagazine for five out of the last six seasons. For the third quarter period, ‘Dateline’ was also #1 across the board for the 6th consecutive quarter and in eight of the last nine quarters, topping ’20/20′ by double-digits across all key demos.”

The announcement adds: “In Friday’s season premiere, ‘On the Outskirts of Town,’ Andrea Canning reports on a young, beloved woman who is found dead near a soccer field in Indiana. As a family and a community grieve, detectives try to piece together a puzzle that leads them to the most unexpected of suspects.”
