In a massive data breach that may have been going on for as long as four years, as many as 500 million people who made reservations at Marriott’s Starwood properties may have had their personal information accessed, USA Today reports.

“The world’s largest hotelier said Friday it determined Nov. 19 that a breach had occurred involving the Starwood guest reservation database, which has information on reservations at Starwood properties made on or before Sept. 10, 2018,” USA Today reports. “A breach that massive would make Marriott’s Starwood incident among the largest breaches ever.”

The report notes that a Yahoo breach in 2013, which affected as many as 3 billion accounts, remains the largest data breach on record.

The Starwood breach “has drawn the attention of legislators and regulators across the U.S. and is expected to attract scrutiny from the European Union due to the global nature and scope of the incident,” USA Today notes. “Marriott stock fell more than 5.5 percent Friday, closing at $115.03.”

  1. There are only two types of companies. Those that have been hacked and those that don’t realize they have been hacked.
