NBC Airs Ad That CNN Had Labeled Racist and Refused to Run

Last night, “In the middle of a highly anticipated ‘Sunday Night Football’ broadcast, NBC aired an immigration-themed advertisement, approved by President Trump, that CNN publicly declared to be racist and unfit for its network,” reports The New York Times.

The story continues, “The 30-second prime-time ad stirred fear of a migrant caravan making its way through Mexico that is still hundreds of miles from the United States border. It tied Luis Bracamontes, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who was convicted of murdering two Sacramento sheriff’s deputies in 2014, to the thousands of migrants who are fleeing Central America, even though Mr. Bracamontes is not known to be associated with the caravan.”

The ad ran during Sunday night’s game between the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers.

The Times also added this comment from CNN: “CNN has made it abundantly clear in its editorial coverage that this ad is racist,” the network’s public relations account posted on Twitter. “When presented with an opportunity to be paid to take a version of this ad, we declined.”

Notes The Hollywood Reporter, in its reporting of this story, “Scores of viewers immediately took to Twitter to call NBC out for its airing of the spot. [Hollywood producer, director and screenwriter] Judd Apatow, for one, sent out a series of tweets and retweets. One said, “So @nbc and @Comcast aired that racist Trump caravan commercial during the football game. Who made that decision? How did they decide it was ok? I am disgusted that you would air that after @cnn refused to air it because it is explicitly racist. Shame on you. @NBCNews”

Both stories said NBC had not gotten back to them by presstime.
