Actor Luke Perry, who suffered a massive stroke last week, died Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, Calif., TMZ reports. He was 52.
Perry, who became a star on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and had recently been playing Archie’s father on CW’s “Riverdale,” never recovered from the stroke he suffered Wednesday morning at his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif.
As we reported last week, Perry had the stroke on the same day news broke that Fox was developing a “90210” reboot. Many of the cast members from the original series had signed on, including Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Perry was not announced as a part of the project.
TMZ quotes “Riverdale” execs saying: “Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all. A father figure and mentor to the show’s young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness. Our thoughts are with Luke’s family during this most difficult time.”
“Riverdale” reportedly shut down production today.
“According to his rep, Luke was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancee Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends,” TMZ notes.
The report adds: “His reps said doctors had sedated Luke, hoping to give his brain a fighting chance to recover from the trauma of the stroke … but apparently, the damage was too extensive.”
Perry, who starred for 10 seasons as Dylan McKay on the original “90210,” recently completed filming on Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Charles Manson movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
He reportedly held off on committing to the “90210” reboot due to commitments to “Riverdale.” TMZ notes that Perry may have been planning to do some guest spots on the “90210” reboot.
