A versatile actress whose movie debut in the 1966 film “The Trouble With Angels” made her a “teenage rebel icon” has died, with Deadline reporting that June Harding died in hospice care in Deer Isle, Maine. She was 81.

The report notes that Harding “broke into show business in the CBS soap opera ‘As the World Turns’ and appeared in several off-Broadway plays. Those roles led Harding to Broadway, where she appeared in the comedy ‘Take Her, She’s Mine’ in December 1961. She played Art Carney’s younger daughter and was opposite Elizabeth Ashley, who played Harding’s sister and won a Tony Award for her role.”

She later appeared on the NBC anthology “The Richard Boone Show,” appearing as several characters. She continued to work in television, with appearances on shows including “The Defenders,” “Dr. Kildare” and “The Fugitive.”

“But it was the movies that won her greatest attention,” Deadline reports. “‘The Trouble With Angels’ (the last film directed by Ida Lupino), brought Harding together with Hayley Mills as mischievous teens getting into trouble at an all-girls Catholic boarding school. The movie was a hit with its target teen audience, briefly making both actresses into fodder for the teen magazines of the day.”

Both actresses opted out of appearing in the sequel, “Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows,” and Harding retired from acting in 1970.

Here’s a clip from “The Trouble With Angels,” in which Harding plays Rachel Devery, best friend to Hayley Mills’ Mary Clancy …

  1. One of my favorite childhood movies that I try to fevisit at least twice a year, funny and yet touching. Hayley Milles was my idol! Those unfamiliar should track it down and give it a look!

  2. According to IMdB, she was born in 1940 and was 78 when she passed.
