Something unprecedented happened at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held Thursday in Oxon Hill, Md. The competition ended in an eight-way tie when eight spellers could not be stumped by anything thrown at them and the organizers finally ran out of words.

“In an unprecedented display of academic achievement, eight spellers have become co-champions of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee, making history as the first group to share the coveted title in the 92 years of the storied event,” the spelling bee organizers wrote in a message accompanying the video.
The event reportedly has never previously had more than a two-way tie for the championship.
Each of the eight winners receives the full prize of $50,000. The champions are Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao and Rohan Raja.
