Netflix Joins in Pressuring Georgia on Abortion Law

Netflix, which reportedly has at least five projects currently filming in the state of Georgia, is taking a stand against the state’s recently passed abortion law. Deadline quotes Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos saying Tuesday that the streaming giant would “rethink our entire investment in Georgia” if the legislation, known as the “heartbeat bill,” were to become state law.

“The bill, among the several that have passed state legislatures in recent weeks, would outlaw most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected — usually as early as six weeks, which sometimes is before a woman knows she’s pregnant,” Deadline reports. The bill is set to become law next year.

In a statement, Sarandos said: “We have many women working on productions in Georgia, whose rights, along with millions of others, will be severely restricted by this law. It’s why we will work with the ACLU and others to fight it in court. Given the legislation has not yet been implemented, we’ll continue to film there — while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to. Should it ever come into effect, we’d rethink our entire investment in Georgia.”

The report cites the Georgia Film Office saying Netflix projects currently filming in the state are “The Liberator,” “Christmas on the Square,” “Holidate,” Season 2 of “Insatiable” and Season 3 of “Ozark.”

  1. Here’s the thing: if these are local people they’re employing, why not be there to give them a job. Then they can afford healthcare and, if so desired, travel to a state where they can get an abortion. But by boycotting the state, they take potential jobs away from the residents they claim to want to support. For the actors who want to boycott, they mostly live out of state, so they aren’t really impacted.
