Syfy Goes Off the Deep End

Syfy announced plans for a programming event that should help the NBCUniversal-owned cable channel feed the summer viewing audience’s seemingly insatiable appetite for shark-themed content.

The channel’s shark-themed “Off the Deep End Weekend,” set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18, will feature not only the entire “Sharknado” franchise, but also the premiere of “Zombie Tidal Wave” starring Ian Ziering.

“Shark Week and SharkFest may have churned the waters but Syfy is turning the tide and going off the deep end with a fintastic frenzy of shark-themed original movies … plus a dose of zombies for good measure!” the channel said in its announcement.

“Zombie Tidal Wave” is the first picture under the production pact between Ziering’s I.Man Productions and Darby Parker’s Stronghold Entertainment. The movie premieres Aug. 17.

“Here, Ziering and Parker, producing from an original story by Ziering and Thunder Levin, and a script by Parker, Ferrante and tyro scribe Josh LeBlanc, move from the fantastic world of shark-slinging tornados to one where zombie-slinging tsunamis offer a special brand of maritime mayhem, going from bad to worse when they make landfall,” Syfy said.

Along with six “Sharknado” movies and two from the “Sharktopus” franchise, the weekend will feature “Megalodon,” “Atomic Shark” and movies featuring sharks with various numbers of heads.
